Finding and Pursuing My Passion

Recently, I published a blog post about how I’ve developed a new passion for photography.

Discovering a passion for photography just seemed like a natural step to me. It just kind of fit. When I already had a keen interest in videography (insert shameless YouTube plug here) and digital media, photography just clicked into place like the missing piece of the puzzle. And it definitely lends itself to the work that I do for this crazy ‘Not So Secret Life Of Us (NSSLOU)’ project that Renee and I started.

So it’s not hard to imagine that the talk around our household over the past few weeks, has focused heavily on photography and pursuing our collective passions further.

IMG_6063

Coincidentally (or bizarrely enough if you will), while Renee was catching up with my brother’s wife (Anita) over lunch the other week, they started talking about pursuing your passion/s. But the twist to the conversation was, pursuing your passion/s whilst working a relatively normal day job.

While they talked, Anita made mention of an article that she had recently stumbled across that gives the reader a slap in the face about finding and pursuing your passion in life. In the article titled ‘Screw Finding Your Passion’, the following questions really caught not only Anita’s attention, but also mine.

“Since when does everyone feel entitled to love every f***ing second of their job? Really, what is so wrong with working an OK normal job with some cool people you like, and then pursuing your passion in your free time on the side? Has the world tuned upside-down or is this not suddenly a novel idea to people?”

Wow… Just… Wow…

This could quite possibly be the most philosophical and relevant thing I’ve read for years. It was like he was writing this specifically for me. A feeling that I know Anita shared.

All this time, without even knowing it, I was doing exactly what he was talking about in his article. I have been pursuing my passions in photography and digital media in my free time alongside my job.

What I had failed to recognise, is that I am incredibly lucky to have been able to do this. I am fortunate to have a good, steady job, regardless of the fact that it isn’t directly related to my passions in life. I am fortunate enough to have found what my passions are. And I am even more fortunate to be able to pursue these passions in my spare time.

What I was guilty of however, is falling into the trap that most people fall into. The trap of thinking that I needed to be making money doing what I love, to be seen as truly following my passions.

Quite simply, this is not the case.

Like many of you out there who are working on your own projects in your area of interest, when Renee and I started our NSSLOU project, we had a clear vision as to what we would like it to become in the future.

But, because the future was increasingly becoming all I thought about… Because I was constantly thinking about how we could turn this into something that we were getting paid for… I lost sight of why we started NSSLOU in the first place.

The NSSLOU was always, and still is, an avenue for me to “work” in the areas I’m passionate about and share it with the world.

It was a way to document our lives for our future generations to look back on (slide night anyone) to see what life was like when we started and raised a family.

It was a way to share our stories and experiences with everyday people in the hope that maybe someday, someone out there read one of our posts and realised that hey, they weren’t the only ones who went through this or that. And they certainly aren’t alone in this crazy journey we call parenthood and life.

So after coming to these realisations, I have come to understand that I need to stop thinking about turning the NSSLOU into a paying job. And what I need to do, is get that enjoyment and fulfilment back that I had when we first started this crazy ride that is the NSSLOU. I need to get back to really enjoying my passions without the stress of worrying about the fact that it’s not paying us money.

So what does getting back to enjoying my passions mean to me?

Well, it means that I want to get out and take all those amazing photographs on our new camera that I’ve often thought about… I want to film and edit those amazing video ideas I’ve had but have never started work on… I want to get back to being proud of my writing and blogging right here on NSSLOU.

PB200163

I have even gone as far as thinking about going back to do some study in the fields I am passionate about. So much so that I have found some courses that I am interested in that are available through SAE Creative Media Institute and The Academy of Design.

PB200185

But I wouldn’t be going back to study for my career (although if an opportunity presented itself I am sure I would consider it). I would be going back to study purely for fun. Purely because I love photography and videography and digital media, so why not go back to study it to better my skills.

You often hear people say, ‘there’s no time like the present’ or, ‘there’s no better day to start than today’. So that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

So, today marks the day that I get back to really enjoying our NSSLOU project. Today marks the day that I get back to really enjoying my passions.

Don’t get me wrong though… The vision we have for the future of this crazy NSSLOU journey we are on is still there. And there is nothing to say that this vision won’t come true.

But for the moment, I have come to realise that first and foremost, I can enjoy working on our NSSLOU project and my passions purely for fun.

Whatever comes in the future, comes. I will be ready for it.

Photo Friday: Time for a beer?

Happy Friday everyone…

We do have a lot of photos that we could have written a post about today, but instead, we thought that we would wish everyone a happy Friday night and a great weekend ahead.

For us, we are kicking back with Jesse and couple of beers while we work on our new YouTube trailer.

Beer Friday

We can’t wait to show you our new trailer when it’s finished…

Stay safe!

A New Passion (What’s in our Camera Bag?)

I thought that for today’s post that I would do something a little different. Today, I am going to talk about a new passion that we have developed recently.

First, let me set the scene with this… I used to be a massive sneaker head! I was literally obsessed. I would spend hours every day searching through eBay and online sneaker sale sites looking to see if I could snap up a bargain pair. I would be constantly scrolling through forums and websites dedicated to sneakers, checking up on the latest and upcoming releases. I would even buy monthly magazines dedicated exclusively to sneakers.

I had over 40 pairs that I would wear on rotation but I was never satisfied with the collection I had, constantly wanting to buy more and more and more… It is pretty obvious that I had a passion for sneakers.

Now while I still love sneakers and the joy that comes with purchasing a new pair, the simple fact is that this has taken a back seat to my newest passion.

My new passion for photography and camera gear!

As you would already know from previous blog posts, we recently bought a new camera. A new camera to take the photos we were wanting to take of Jesse and also for use with our Not So Secret Life Of Us project.

Due to the fact that we only had some simple point and click cameras, we were in desperate need of one that took high quality shots of Jesse that were worthy of framing and hanging on our walls. And we finally got it.

But like all new passions, it hasn’t stopped there… We now find ourselves constantly wanting to add to our ‘camera bag’. Whether it’s accessories for our new camera, or other equipment that we can utilise for our future photos and videos.

It’s so bad now, that I can’t walk past a camera shop without going in and checking out all their merchandise… cameras and all! But all that said, we absolutely love it. Our new passion is one that we both get to enjoy and be a part of.

So in honour of our new passion, I thought that it would be a good opportunity to share what is in our camera bag. While it isn’t much at the moment, this is only the beginning to a new passion that I’m sure will see our camera bag expand to something much… much more.

Camera Bag

Our current camera bag consists of:

  • Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II camera
  • Olympus lens kit (incl. 14-42mm lens, 45mm portrait lens and 40-150mm lens)
  • Sony Cybershot WX300 camera
  • Sony Cybershot TX10 waterproof camera
  • Lenspen lens cleaner
  • Swiss army knife (an actual one that I bought in Switzerland)
  • Weifeng WF-531BT tripod
  • Mini tripod
  • Selfie stick
  • Verbatim portable iphone charger
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • Digital Photography Guidebook (our bible while were still learning the ropes)
  • A5 notebook and pens

So who else has a passion for photography and camera gear out there? For those who do… what’s in your camera bag?

I can’t wait to get back out and about to take more photographs. I absolutely love it!

Footage Friday: Caravan Shows and Swimming

T.G.I.F… Why? Because that means it’s Footage Friday again!

On Sunday last weekend, you would have seen us post about the fact that we went to a Caravan Expo and also took Jesse for his first swim.

Well, we thought that it would be a good opportunity to take the vlogging camera with us so we could record what we got up to throughout the day.

We finally got around to editing, exporting and uploading it last night. So here it is, ready for your viewing pleasure on Footage Friday.

Milk Drunk Love Stories: Our Breastfeeding Journey, Part II

Last week I wrote about taking part in a new project all about the ways in which we nourish our children.

Nourish: Milk Drunk Love Stories is a project curated by photographer Renee Trubai and she kindly asked if we would share our story of our feeding experiences with Jesse.

You can read our full story here on her blog.

Renee is looking for others to share their stories too so don’t be shy if you feel you have a story to tell.

Jesse’s First Swim

Spring time in Queensland is glorious. So we definitely wanted to take advantage of this amazing weather with a road trip today.

So we packed the car, bundled Jesse up and hit the road to the big smoke for a Caravan and Camping Show and then for lunch and a swim at South Bank.

As you would have read previously, we are in the early stages of planning a big trip around Australia. So when we found out there was a caravan and camping show sale on just outside the Brisbane CBD, we definitely wanted to head in for a look.

But the best part of the day was when we headed over the Brisbane River to South Bank for lunch and a swim. Jesse’s first swim. And it was the perfect opportunity to try our new camera outdoors (since the weather has been rainy and overcast for the past week). We couldn’t wait.

After absolutely demolishing a couple of burgers for lunch, and feeding Jesse his puréed fruit, it was time to jump into the pool to cool off. Jump in for Jesse’s first swim. A swim we knew Jesse was going to love.

And love it he did. He didn’t flinch one bit when Renee took him into the water. And he didn’t complain once while he was in there. Instead, just after i’d finished taking the photos that you can see below, he fell asleep in the water. He really must have loved the cool water against his hot skin.

PB010069

It was so cute seeing him enjoying his first swim. Even if it meant that he didn’t enjoy it for very long on account of him falling asleep. But it was great to have such beautiful weather that we could actually get outside and enjoy spring in Brisbane.

PB010083

PB010091

After our little swim, we decided to head off and have a wander through the South Bank markets. Our little family. The three of us, out on a Sunday enjoying the outdoors together.

Before we had Jesse I would look at little families and often think, they look like a nice family. I wonder if young couples look at us now and think the same thing?

PB010103

After having such a great day out, on the way home in the car discussion turned to how we should actually get out and enjoy the great outdoors more often. There are YouTubers we watch that are always getting out and enjoying the outdoors. Whether that be just walking around enjoying the sun, or getting our for a skate, bike ride or mountain climbing.

And I even know a few people at my work who are always out and about on weekends. Sharing photos of their latest adventures on Instagram and Facebook.

We came to the conclusion that it doesn’t really cost any money to go out on adventures like that. And that it is definitely something we need to do a lot more of. Especially now that we have such a nice camera to use.

So where do you go on adventures to? Where is your favourite place outdoors to visit? What suggestions could you give us for our next adventure as a family?

As I finish off this post, all I can think about is how excited I am for our next outdoors adventure as a family. #family #love

Photo Friday: Food, Glorious Food

This week we decided to start Jesse on solids….well, if you can call purée a solid.

PA260065

Five months may be a little early if you ask the ‘experts’ but he has been giving us all the signs that he was ready for more than a liquid diet.

So we started off with something basic. Some organic pumpkin and swede boiled and blitzed with a little breast milk for added goodness.

And well, we think he liked it.

We love these photographs captured on our new camera (Olympus EM10 Mark II).

And for good measure, here is a little video too.

Milk Drunk Love Stories: Our Breastfeeding Journey So Far

I was recently asked by our photographer Renee Trubai to contribute to her Nourish: Milk Drunk Love Stories project.

Renee’s vision for the project is to develop a community of parents supporting and cheering each other on by sharing their experiences on nourishing their children in whatever form that may be.

I was delighted to be asked to be involved and spent several days thinking back over our experiences with learning to feed our baby. I was reminded of just how tough those early days and weeks are. What seems so instinctive on the surface is actually a really complex and confusing issue. It is great that we have so much information and so many options available but this also adds to the complexity.

When I sat down to write our story I was taken back to a time not so long ago when I felt like I was never going to get off the couch. All those hours spent feeding our baby, helping him to grow and flourish. The days just disappeared in the repetitive cycle of feeding and pumping all the while trying to learn to read our baby’s cues and understand what he needed. Nights were even harder when we had to do it all again but this time alone, in the dark while the rest of the world slept. Learning to feed our babies often comes with a lot of frustration and tears but also a lot of beautiful moments too.

IMG_2317

If there is one thing I’ve learned during these past five months of being a parent it is that no matter what path we or nature might chose for nourishing our babies we should execute it proudly and without shame. A happy and healthy baby (and a happy Mama!) is far more important than how that nourishment is delivered.

Our story will be shared soon. In the meantime, head over to Milk Drunk Love Stories and check out the beautiful stories from other parents and maybe even share your own. It is an incredibly supportive and uplifting community. We are very proud and honoured to be a part of it.

Happy 90th Birthday Nan

Yesterday we celebrated my Nan’s 90th birthday with a surprise birthday party and morning tea at one of the local parks near where she lives. 90 years old. And still going strong by all accounts, even if she is starting to forget some of the finer details.

So after bundling up Jesse, his nappy bag, the new camera and ourselves, it was over the bridge to the other side of town for morning tea and birthday cake.

We don’t see my extended family very often, so there were a lot of unfamiliar faces there. But there were some familiar ones too. And it was great to see the surprise and smile on Nan’s face as she turned up to her family singing her happy birthday.

PA250035

PA250053

It was a lovely morning to be outdoors (despite the fact it was a little cloudy). And Jesse seemed to be loving his time outside soaking up the fresh air and nature. It was also the perfect opportunity for us to take our new camera for some more practice shots.

PA250002

PA250060

Later that night, Renee and I got to talking about the mornings activities, in particular, we talked about being old. “Would you still love me if I was old and wrinkly like your nan?” she asked.

“Babe, based on the history that women live longer than men, I’ll probably be dead by then!” I joked.

That said, I really do hope that one day I’ll get to celebrate my 90th birthday… And if I do, I hope that I’m still of sound mind to realise what a momentous occasion it is.

Footage Friday: 4 Month Milestones

Whoops. This post is a day late.

Last weekend, we finally got around to shooting the 4 month milestones video for Jesse. A little late (considering he is nearly 5 months old now), but it is done.

We talk about many things that have happened since his 3 month video, including his second round of vaccinations, his growth and his weight gain, our highlights and an update on his feet.
