Finding and Pursuing My Passion

Recently, I published a blog post about how I’ve developed a new passion for photography.

Discovering a passion for photography just seemed like a natural step to me. It just kind of fit. When I already had a keen interest in videography (insert shameless YouTube plug here) and digital media, photography just clicked into place like the missing piece of the puzzle. And it definitely lends itself to the work that I do for this crazy ‘Not So Secret Life Of Us (NSSLOU)’ project that Renee and I started.

So it’s not hard to imagine that the talk around our household over the past few weeks, has focused heavily on photography and pursuing our collective passions further.

Coincidentally (or bizarrely enough if you will), while Renee was catching up with my brother’s wife (Anita) over lunch the other week, they started talking about pursuing your passion/s. But the twist to the conversation was, pursuing your passion/s whilst working a relatively normal day job.

While they talked, Anita made mention of an article that she had recently stumbled across that gives the reader a slap in the face about finding and pursuing your passion in life. In the article titled ‘Screw Finding Your Passion’, the following questions really caught not only Anita’s attention, but also mine.

“Since when does everyone feel entitled to love every f***ing second of their job? Really, what is so wrong with working an OK normal job with some cool people you like, and then pursuing your passion in your free time on the side? Has the world tuned upside-down or is this not suddenly a novel idea to people?”

Wow… Just… Wow…

This could quite possibly be the most philosophical and relevant thing I’ve read for years. It was like he was writing this specifically for me. A feeling that I know Anita shared.

All this time, without even knowing it, I was doing exactly what he was talking about in his article. I have been pursuing my passions in photography and digital media in my free time alongside my job.

What I had failed to recognise, is that I am incredibly lucky to have been able to do this. I am fortunate to have a good, steady job, regardless of the fact that it isn’t directly related to my passions in life. I am fortunate enough to have found what my passions are. And I am even more fortunate to be able to pursue these passions in my spare time.

What I was guilty of however, is falling into the trap that most people fall into. The trap of thinking that I needed to be making money doing what I love, to be seen as truly following my passions.

Quite simply, this is not the case.

Like many of you out there who are working on your own projects in your area of interest, when Renee and I started our NSSLOU project, we had a clear vision as to what we would like it to become in the future.

But, because the future was increasingly becoming all I thought about… Because I was constantly thinking about how we could turn this into something that we were getting paid for… I lost sight of why we started NSSLOU in the first place.

The NSSLOU was always, and still is, an avenue for me to “work” in the areas I’m passionate about and share it with the world.

It was a way to document our lives for our future generations to look back on (slide night anyone) to see what life was like when we started and raised a family.

It was a way to share our stories and experiences with everyday people in the hope that maybe someday, someone out there read one of our posts and realised that hey, they weren’t the only ones who went through this or that. And they certainly aren’t alone in this crazy journey we call parenthood and life.

So after coming to these realisations, I have come to understand that I need to stop thinking about turning the NSSLOU into a paying job. And what I need to do, is get that enjoyment and fulfilment back that I had when we first started this crazy ride that is the NSSLOU. I need to get back to really enjoying my passions without the stress of worrying about the fact that it’s not paying us money.

So what does getting back to enjoying my passions mean to me?

Well, it means that I want to get out and take all those amazing photographs on our new camera that I’ve often thought about… I want to film and edit those amazing video ideas I’ve had but have never started work on… I want to get back to being proud of my writing and blogging right here on NSSLOU.

PB200163

I have even gone as far as thinking about going back to do some study in the fields I am passionate about. So much so that I have found some courses that I am interested in that are available through SAE Creative Media Institute and The Academy of Design.

PB200185

But I wouldn’t be going back to study for my career (although if an opportunity presented itself I am sure I would consider it). I would be going back to study purely for fun. Purely because I love photography and videography and digital media, so why not go back to study it to better my skills.

You often hear people say, ‘there’s no time like the present’ or, ‘there’s no better day to start than today’. So that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

So, today marks the day that I get back to really enjoying our NSSLOU project. Today marks the day that I get back to really enjoying my passions.

Don’t get me wrong though… The vision we have for the future of this crazy NSSLOU journey we are on is still there. And there is nothing to say that this vision won’t come true.

But for the moment, I have come to realise that first and foremost, I can enjoy working on our NSSLOU project and my passions purely for fun.

Whatever comes in the future, comes. I will be ready for it.

Dear Paris…

Dear Paris,

I can’t even begin to understand how you are feeling after these most recent terror attacks that have absolutely shattered you to your core.

I know that I am but a singular blip in this big, big world of ours. And that my thoughts and feelings will likely just get lost in the waves of sympathy and support that you will be getting from many around the world.

But I feel like I want to tell you… that I need to tell you… that we love you and that our thoughts and prayers are with you during this terrible, terrible time.

We have seen your beautiful country. And Paris, you were absolutely lovely. We loved everything about you. Your beautiful city… your majestic Eiffel Tower… your food… your amazing people… your wonderful French language…

You opened your doors and allowed us in to catch but a glimpse of what is one of the most beautiful cities we have ever seen. One of the most amazing cultures we have ever experienced. And allowed us to have what was, one of the best weeks of our lives.

I do not understand why anyone… anywhere… would want to lay harm to you Paris. And all I can say right now, is that you most definitely didn’t deserve this.

The city of love rocked by acts of hate. Cowardly acts of hate.

But if there is one thing I do know Paris, it’s that you are not just beautiful… You are strong. You are resilient. You are united.

I know that you have the strength to get through this. Not only together, but also with the rest of the world right behind you. I know you will come back from this stronger than ever. More united than ever. And more resilient than ever.

Paris, you will recover from this. And both Renee and I, along with the whole world, will continue to send our thoughts and prayers and help, until your wounds have fully healed.

We will continue, to pray for you Paris.

And we will see you in all your glory again… one day in the future.

Pray for Paris

Photo Friday: Time for a beer?

Happy Friday everyone…

We do have a lot of photos that we could have written a post about today, but instead, we thought that we would wish everyone a happy Friday night and a great weekend ahead.

For us, we are kicking back with Jesse and couple of beers while we work on our new YouTube trailer.

Beer Friday

We can’t wait to show you our new trailer when it’s finished…

Stay safe!

Footage Friday: Caravan Shows and Swimming

T.G.I.F… Why? Because that means it’s Footage Friday again!

On Sunday last weekend, you would have seen us post about the fact that we went to a Caravan Expo and also took Jesse for his first swim.

Well, we thought that it would be a good opportunity to take the vlogging camera with us so we could record what we got up to throughout the day.

We finally got around to editing, exporting and uploading it last night. So here it is, ready for your viewing pleasure on Footage Friday.

Jesse’s First Swim

Spring time in Queensland is glorious. So we definitely wanted to take advantage of this amazing weather with a road trip today.

So we packed the car, bundled Jesse up and hit the road to the big smoke for a Caravan and Camping Show and then for lunch and a swim at South Bank.

As you would have read previously, we are in the early stages of planning a big trip around Australia. So when we found out there was a caravan and camping show sale on just outside the Brisbane CBD, we definitely wanted to head in for a look.

But the best part of the day was when we headed over the Brisbane River to South Bank for lunch and a swim. Jesse’s first swim. And it was the perfect opportunity to try our new camera outdoors (since the weather has been rainy and overcast for the past week). We couldn’t wait.

After absolutely demolishing a couple of burgers for lunch, and feeding Jesse his puréed fruit, it was time to jump into the pool to cool off. Jump in for Jesse’s first swim. A swim we knew Jesse was going to love.

And love it he did. He didn’t flinch one bit when Renee took him into the water. And he didn’t complain once while he was in there. Instead, just after i’d finished taking the photos that you can see below, he fell asleep in the water. He really must have loved the cool water against his hot skin.

It was so cute seeing him enjoying his first swim. Even if it meant that he didn’t enjoy it for very long on account of him falling asleep. But it was great to have such beautiful weather that we could actually get outside and enjoy spring in Brisbane.

PB010083

PB010091

After our little swim, we decided to head off and have a wander through the South Bank markets. Our little family. The three of us, out on a Sunday enjoying the outdoors together.

Before we had Jesse I would look at little families and often think, they look like a nice family. I wonder if young couples look at us now and think the same thing?

PB010103

After having such a great day out, on the way home in the car discussion turned to how we should actually get out and enjoy the great outdoors more often. There are YouTubers we watch that are always getting out and enjoying the outdoors. Whether that be just walking around enjoying the sun, or getting our for a skate, bike ride or mountain climbing.

And I even know a few people at my work who are always out and about on weekends. Sharing photos of their latest adventures on Instagram and Facebook.

We came to the conclusion that it doesn’t really cost any money to go out on adventures like that. And that it is definitely something we need to do a lot more of. Especially now that we have such a nice camera to use.

So where do you go on adventures to? Where is your favourite place outdoors to visit? What suggestions could you give us for our next adventure as a family?

As I finish off this post, all I can think about is how excited I am for our next outdoors adventure as a family. #family #love

Happy 90th Birthday Nan

Yesterday we celebrated my Nan’s 90th birthday with a surprise birthday party and morning tea at one of the local parks near where she lives. 90 years old. And still going strong by all accounts, even if she is starting to forget some of the finer details.

So after bundling up Jesse, his nappy bag, the new camera and ourselves, it was over the bridge to the other side of town for morning tea and birthday cake.

We don’t see my extended family very often, so there were a lot of unfamiliar faces there. But there were some familiar ones too. And it was great to see the surprise and smile on Nan’s face as she turned up to her family singing her happy birthday.

It was a lovely morning to be outdoors (despite the fact it was a little cloudy). And Jesse seemed to be loving his time outside soaking up the fresh air and nature. It was also the perfect opportunity for us to take our new camera for some more practice shots.

Later that night, Renee and I got to talking about the mornings activities, in particular, we talked about being old. “Would you still love me if I was old and wrinkly like your nan?” she asked.

“Babe, based on the history that women live longer than men, I’ll probably be dead by then!” I joked.

That said, I really do hope that one day I’ll get to celebrate my 90th birthday… And if I do, I hope that I’m still of sound mind to realise what a momentous occasion it is.

Footage Friday: 4 Month Milestones

Whoops. This post is a day late.

Last weekend, we finally got around to shooting the 4 month milestones video for Jesse. A little late (considering he is nearly 5 months old now), but it is done.

We talk about many things that have happened since his 3 month video, including his second round of vaccinations, his growth and his weight gain, our highlights and an update on his feet.

I HATE BABY CAR SEATS

So I figured out three things yesterday…

  1. I hate baby car seats!
  2. I hate installing baby car seats!
  3. I hate when I can’t finish installing a baby car seat!

Yes… These three things really ended my day yesterday in a wave of frustration and anger.

Our little Jesse was starting to outgrow his baby capsule. He has always been quite a long baby despite being a lightweight, and lately, his little legs and feet have been sticking out the end of the capsule to the point where he was able to kick the back of the seat.

Right we thought, time to upgrade the seat to something a little bigger and better.

So we packed the car, bundled up the little one and headed out for the morning to look at baby seats! We even thought that this might be a good opportunity to take the camera along and film another vlog.

Well, we did end up buying a new car seat, and a good one at that! We packed it in the boot eager to get home to install this seat that looks like the worlds comfiest chair! I mean, if they made full size versions of this thing, I’d be first in line for one!

We unpacked it, got it ready for installation and then BAM!!! It was like the capsule all over again. What is it with installing baby seats in cars that something has to inevitably go wrong!

In the end, it turned out that the tether wasn’t long enough to reach to the floor in the boot of our Outlander. “Well this is stupid!” I thought. “Why don’t they make these tethers long enough to fit all vehicles?”

We had to abandon the install in search of an extension belt for the tether. Something that, given the time it was, we wouldn’t be able to get until tomorrow.

Luckily, while I stayed at home with Jesse for the morning, Renee was able to find a tether extender, and in the end, we were able to finish the installation successfully albeit a little later than expected.

It really feels like the people in the baby stuff business are just sitting back and laughing at all of us… scheming about how they can best screw with our heads and tempers next!

I’m just glad this new seat is supposed to last Jesse until he is 4 years old. I’ll be buggered if I’m going to install another new one any time soon!!!

The Big Lap: Must See Events?

So today was Bathurst 1000 Day. The race that stops the nation!

We love ourselves a bit of Bathurst action, and today, we made the decision to kick back for the whole day to watch the race. 161 laps of V8 goodness.

It got us to thinking though, about how on many occasions we’ve spoken about making the trip down to Mt Panorama to watch it live one year. To take it the sights, sounds and smells of an authentic Bathurst experience.

We are currently in the early stages of planning a road trip around Australia! We’re going to do the big lap! Young nomads on the road exploring our own country.

And today something clicked. As we were watching V8s race around the famous Aussie track we thought, let’s stop at Mt Panorama on our big lap trip! What a perfect opportunity to get tickets to see Bathurst live!

Photo: Fox Sports News, Twitter

It then got us thinking further… Well, apart from Bathurst, what other famous events could we attend while we travel round our magnificent country?

So what are some events that we could plan for on our travels around Australia? What are the must see events that are on your list?

We have come up with a few that we would like to attend on our travels around this great country. The ones we have thought of so far are:

  • Bathurst 1000 (obviously)
  • Gympie Music Muster
  • Tamworth Country Music Festival
  • Australian Open (tennis)
  • Rugby League State of Origin (NSW/QLD)

Being that we have only seen a very small portion of Australia, we are really looking forward to this big trip. And the fact that we can attend so many amazing events that Australia has on offer while we are on the road, will only make it better!

I Love Rugby League

Ok… So before you read on, let me give you a little warning about this post.

  1. It’s all about the great sport that is Rugby League.
  2. It’s completely biased toward the Brisbane Broncos.

Right, now that’s out the way, let me just say that I love Rugby League. I love my footy. And most of all, I LOVE the Brisbane Broncos!

Thumbnail

Today is the 2015 National Rugby League (NRL) Grand Final, and I am excited! Despite the fact it means another season of amazing footy is all but finished. I am excited for three reasons…

  1. The Brisbane Broncos are playing in the Grand Final tonight!
  2. The North Queensland Cowboys are also playing in the Grand Final tonight.
  3. This means that no NSW teams made the Grand Final.

This is the first time ever, that two Queensland teams have made the Grand Final. And it’s very exciting.

I have been a massive fan of the Broncos for a long time now. Being that I was born and raised in Brisbane, Queensland, and also that my dad has supported the Broncos since they entered the competition in 1988, it was only logical that I too supported the mighty Broncos. Six premierships later the Broncos are one of the most successful clubs in the NRL and are often referred to as the ‘glamour club’. All that said, all I know is this… I love the mighty maroon and gold and every time they run out onto the field I am cheering for them to come home with a win.

So, imagine my excitement when we entered 2015. 26 regular season rounds and 3 finals rounds later, we are in the GRAND FINAL! What makes this even sweeter is of course, the fact that there are no NSW teams are playing in today’s game. And the only thing that will top this off as one of the best sporting days of the past, almost ten years, is the Broncos winning the Grand Final.

Facebook photo

So today, to celebrate the achievements of Queensland Rugby League, we are having a Grand Final party to celebrate the fact that two Queensland teams will face each other on the biggest day in the NRL calendar. And hopefully, the celebrations will run into a celebration of Broncos winning the Grand Final!

I know I said it before, but I’ll say it again… GEEZ I LOVE MY FOOTY!!!

So that all said, it’s time for me to sign off. The beers are cold, the food is ready and the game of the day is about to start…

GO THE BRONCOS!!!
